Dermal Fillers

FREQEUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Dermal Fillers are made of Hyaluronic Acid. But what is Hyaluronic acid? Hyaluronic acid is a gel that is injected into the skin to add volume to the lips, restore volume, and fill in wrinkles or folds. The syringe contains hyaluronic acid almost identical to that naturally found in the body. It is completely biologically degradable.

  • A small amount is injected directly into the skin to add volume. Hyaluronic Acid is naturally integrated into the tissue and allows for the free passage of important nutritive elements like oxygen and hormones. The product will bind water, which adds to the filling effect.

  • Pain is very individualized and dependent on one’s tolerance to pain. The fillers contain a temporary freezing ingredient (similar to “dental freezing”) so that most patients report that the discomfort was minimal. A topical numbing agent is also applied prior to any pokes.

  • The treatment can be carried out immediately and takes about 20-45 minutes. Filler is injected with a very thin needle into the skin. The results can be seen immediately. Clients may or may not experience slight swelling or bruising in the treated area.

  • Yes, if needed or desired, a special reversal agent called “hyaluronidase” can be injected to dissolve the filler.

  • The filler dissolves naturally with time, and without touch-ups will eventually totally disappear from the body. How long a hyaluronic acid filler treatment lasts is very individual, depending on many factors such as the structure of the skin, lifestyle, age and metabolism.

The types of fillers that Nurse Dez uses typically last anywhere from 9 to 18 months, depending on the type of filler used and location of injection. You can replenish the filler whenever you feel the need, as touch-ups can be performed any time after the initial treatment.

The injected material will gradually disappear until your skin looks just as it did before the treatment.

  • Two to three days prior to injections, avoid topical Retinols, Glycolic Acid, or any other anti-aging products

24-48 hours prior avoid drinking alcohol, caffeine or taking blood thinning substances such as garlic, St. John’s Wart, Omegas, Flax Oil, Vitamin A, Vitamin E or any other essential fatty acids at least 3 days to 1 week before and after treatment to minimize bruising or bleeding. Please consult with your primary physician prior to discontinuing any medications/supplements.

To minimize bruising it is suggested to take Arnica Tablets prior and after appointment.

Patients should not schedule any invasive procedures for 2 weeks before or after any Dental cleaning, dental work, or surgery of any kind.

Women are more likely to bleed and bruise around the time of their menstrual cycle. Try to plan accordingly.

  • • Do not touch, press or manipulate the filler for up to 2 weeks post treatment.

    • Avoid vigorous exercise, sun and heat exposure for 3 days. Wear SPF.

    • Avoid alcohol, caffeine, high sodium foods, and cigarettes for up to 24 hours. These may increase irritation.

    • Avoid Retin-A or similar products 2 days after treatments to avoid increased irritation or redness.

    • Drink lots of water for two weeks, this is essential to help the filler pull in water.

    • Keep the lips hydrated with a lip balm such as Blistex.

    • Apply Arnica cream if you bruise, leave it on like a lip mask.

  • During your treatment we will go over any possible side effects. For any reason; please reach out, never hesitate! Nurse Dez is happy to chat with you about any post treatment questions any time of day.

  • It is best to wait four weeks before and after your Covid-19 Vaccine before getting any dermal filler treatments. Why? Because when the immune system is heightened, you are more likely to have a reaction and swell significantly. Please plan accordingly!
